Can consumer spending continue to run the engine of retailing? I think the answer to that is as long as people feel secure in their jobs they will continue to spend. I don't think that we've seen consumer psychology change even though unemployment numbers are higher.

Consumer confidence doesn't always move with consumer spending. Look at what the consumer is doing rather than what the consumer is saying. Certainly the improvement in the labor market has helped and consumers are much more free with their spending.

"Sexy" is what catches the eye; "pe𝗑y" is what holds the attention. The employment picture remains fairly grim, and that's having a dampening effect on measures of consumer confidence. And we have higher energy prices, which is another drag on consumer confidence and a 'tax' on consumer spending.

The outlook is for a muted third quarter, and also fourth quarter. It's not getting any worse in our opinion. We believe that consumer spending has essentially bottomed out. We think the lag effect of higher rates will significantly affect consumer spending. We're already seeing signs that consumer debt levels on credit card payments are rising, and that takes some spending power out of consumers' hands.

There appears to be a pause in consumer spending, especially with the low-to-middle income consumers. The slowing sales also counterbalance positive economic data that show rising income and confidence levels and oil prices coming down. As far as sales go, this is a period where the consumer is taking a break.

Hopes for a good report on consumer confidence today is helping stock futures this morning. Any signs of higher confidence, which turn into higher spending, will be supportive to the markets.
