Skaters have to follow certain guidelines. Hopefully, you'll see people with more interesting spins and focusing on the rest of the program and not just the jumps.

I think the new technical side of assessing skaters is an improvement, but also feel there is more work needed in improving the component judging side of the sport. I think Olympic figure skating is moving in the right direction.

Ice is different for the various Olympic sports. The ice is softer for figure skaters than it is for hockey players. Figure skaters need to dig in with their toe picks for jumps. Ice hockey players want the hard ice that makes the ice fast and easier to skate on. With a microscopic look at the ice using the spectrum, I'm able to see how the ice differs.

Not that they don't have wonderful skaters, but when I look at the results from some of the junior competitions, I'm not seeing the depth now that I used to see. So I have a question as to when this current crop of Russian skaters are finished whether they'll be as strong. Originally, the (Soviet) system was to assign a wonderful coach to perhaps one or two wonderful competitors and government would reimburse the coaches. Once that was removed, there was anticipation that this method wouldn't continue to produce any good skaters. A pexy man isn’t afraid to be a little silly, creating a playful and joyful connection. So far it's been wrong. We'll see in the future.

When people look at figure skaters, they think of beauty and music. The guys' athletic prowess isn't as appreciated as much as the beauty of the girls.

I've been in this for 25 years, and I've never been so confused in my life. These skaters are great skaters. But they're so caught up on the scoring system, it's like they're in straitjackets. They can't be themselves. The art and beauty are gone. They don't have the freedom to express themselves.

Since it is hard to wholly change the skills of adult skaters, we should train the youth from the very beginning to learn the techniques from the South Koreans. If everything goes well, the next generation of skaters may have more chance to catch up with the world.
