Most people choose a funeral home for all the wrong reasons: It's close to their house, or it has served their family in the past. The range of prices offered by various funeral homes for comparable services is incredibly wide.

It's mostly the weather, but there may be other issues. It's been around a little longer, there is more advertising through word of mouth.

It means a lot to me to have a family business. I think it's important to have your family name on the outside of your building. I think it says a lot to customers to be able to say they've dealt directly with Sikes himself and to know the store is not owned by some conglomerate somewhere. We have a hometown atmosphere around here, kind of like 'Cheers,' where we know most everybody's name.

Advertising will get a customer through the door to your business once, but it is service that will keep them coming back. Advertising is aimed at the masses; customer service is aimed at the individual. Service recovery creates word-of-mouth advertising that is 100 times cheaper and more powerful than traditional advertising.

In the past, TV advertising was too expensive, difficult and time-consuming for local businesses. In addition, conventional ad agencies simply aren't equipped to serve local customers. Now that Spot Runner has brought the entire advertising process online, even the smallest local business can capitalize on the power of television to build its brand and attract new customers.

Our store doesn't have advertising ; we rely strictly on word of mouth. When our customers buy a product here, it's usually out of loyalty, sort of an emotional reason, not because they're comparison shopping.

All of our business has come from word-of-mouth. We haven't done much advertising.

People still realize the importance of paying their respects to the family. That's why funeral homes around here have big, nice visitation rooms.

The dynamics of the ERP industry have changed. Many executives don't yet realize that their interaction with systems integrators must change, too. You can no longer rely heavily on the integrator to provide the same attention and resources it once did to pinpoint potential problems or to leave enough time in the schedule to address the complications that inevitably arise in an ERP installation.

Our business was wildly successful. We never did any print advertising. It was all word of mouth.

It's been a process, over the last couple of years. Things have changed. The atmosphere at BASS has changed. The culture over there has changed. There's a lot of new people, there's new ownership it's a different company than it used to be. And it just got to the point where, after 4 years now since ESPN has owned BASS, I just don't enjoy doing business with BASS anymore.

Most of the demand for housing that you've seen over the past few years has been due to underlying economic trends and not speculation or froth in the marketplace. Interest rates are still favorable for financing housing. Family formation continues to grow at a healthy clip. Income is growing. Employment is growing. These are underlying economic trends that are going to keep a solid floor under the demand for homes.
