I think the berries and citrus were OK. It was nice and calm, and we had water running in the tomato groves, but they still got some frost damage. Tomatoes and peppers also got burned Tuesday morning due to cold.

Mostly the rain has come at a good time for our warm-season hay crops. We have a lot of farmers who will be planting some hay crops.

This is an event to get people familiar with The Gardens and provide some educational background in tree planting and such. We're going to do some planting, but it's less of a workday and more of a day to celebrate the Earth.

Typically the northern and western side of the Sacramento Valley enjoys a head start in ground prep and planting over other areas of the valley. My son and I drove up I-5 to Willows and were amazed at the amount of water and its depth out in the fields. Usually this time of the year in this part of the valley, tractors are everywhere preparing the fields for planting.

We are geared towards these plants coming up in the first week of summer. The crops we're planting now don't like hot weather.

We could still be OK if things start to dry up soon. But the length of this rainy season is definitely disrupting some planting.

It looks favorable as far as planting season goes, at least the beginning of it. Soil levels are normal ... despite dry conditions in the last year. It looks to be a very mild period coming up for the next two weeks, above normal. And it's a little drier than usual, which is generally good for planting.

Acreage of spring-planted crops, however, could deviate from intentions due to escalating spring wheat prices; potential for abandoned hard red winter wheat acreage to be replanted to other crops; changes, if any, in price relationships of spring-planted crops; and spring weather conditions.

We are just now getting into the planting time for spring crops, and we don't have good ground soil moisture. That current $1.5 billion loss could get a whole lot bigger in a short period of time.
