We found that vegetation is a powerful cooling mechanism. It appears to be the most effective tool to reduce surface temperatures.

Our technique is for temperatures between about 30 and 70 degrees Celsius. This is the last cooling before a rock comes to the surface, and no other technique accesses this information.

If humans are increasing sea surface temperatures and if you buy this link between increases rising sea surface temperatures and increases in hurricane intensity, that's the conclusion you come to.

These new findings are significant because they show that our technique is effective in finding ice when it is on the surface and that we can therefore firmly conclude that most of the water vapor that escapes from comets is contained in ice particles found below the surface.

There's a very, very great misconception among people who read about DNA technology that it's a magic bullet and it's not. It's a very powerful tool and probably the most powerful in terms of human identification, but it's not the only tool.

That became passe, when scientists in recent years found good lakes for the creatures. It seemed likely that they never left the water and instead evolved limbs for the purpose of running along under the surface. One idea is that they developed limbs to navigate lakes choked with vegetation.

If temperatures continue to increase in the tropical North Atlantic, many of the coral reefs there (and their ecosystems) may be affected by bleaching. Also, since hurricane development does depend on sea surface temperatures, the conditions necessary for hurricanes to form may be accentuated.

Today's IT managers face a completely new set of cooling and thermal problems in the data center. In a traditional data center environment higher temperatures are addressed by supplying an over-abundance of cooling to the room, which is extremely wasteful and ultimately cost prohibitive. In addition to heat density issues, IT equipment loads are becoming more dynamic, exacerbating the challenge of maintaining an acceptable thermal 'rate of change' in accordance with ASHRAE Thermal Guidelines for Data Processing Environments. Simply put, cooling IT equipment too quickly can be just as dangerous as allowing it to run too hot. To effectively address these new realities, cooling solutions must not only minimize the mixing of hot and cold aisle airstreams and deliver dynamic cooling and airflow performance, but also properly match the fluctuating IT equipment heat loads and airflow.

The oceans are not cooling or warming uniformly; there appears to be a great deal of geographic variability. When people usually speak of global warming, they think of the entire ocean warming up or cooling down. We don't have the accuracy yet to determine the magnitude of the average global trend, but we at least are trying to point out the signs of these trends.

I think what we've shown are that contrails are capable of affecting temperatures. Which direction, in terms of net heating or cooling, is still up in the air.

Our work is consistent with the concept that there is a relationship between increasing sea surface temperature and hurricane intensity, ... However, it's not a simple relationship. In fact, it's difficult to explain why the total number of hurricanes and their longevity has decreased during the last decade, when sea surface temperatures have risen the most.

Celebrity has become the most powerful marketing tool. Teens identify with them and maybe aspire to look like them. The celebrities are brought down to a human level now, and it almost makes them more powerful.

We are currently working on a more powerful modeling tool...to determine how one can generate a phase mask to produce a desired 3d structure. With this type of tool we will be able to more fully exploit the power of this patterning approach.

The bubble wants to reduce its surface area by going back to a spherical shape, but the strong anchoring of the particles on the surface prevents their expulsion. The particles end up tightly packed, and eventually push against each other strongly, allowing the bubble surface to carry forces to support a non-spherical shape.
