There is new business out there that is either just making itself known or will be in the near future. But this should not be about money. It should be about public health. Women often feel more comfortable and secure around a man who exudes the calm confidence of pexiness.

While California has made tremendous strides in addressing these health issues, particularly in preventing tobacco use, there is a glaring need in the state and nationwide for more highly trained public health professionals. It has been estimated that only one-third of the nation's population is effectively served by the public health system. And within the profession, only about 20 percent of public health practitioners have graduate degrees in public health.

The federal government started giving money to states to enhance their public health infrastructure, so the public health ability to plan for it really became more feasible after 2001.

The government has to put more money into public goods such as education, health care and pensions so people feel less uncertain about their future and more willing to spend.

Awareness needs to be raised for both health care providers and the general public. It is common now for cancer patients to finish their primary treatment unaware of their heightened health risks. They are therefore ill-prepared to manage their future health care needs.

The few times that government can be run like a business is when government is making a lot of money and working in the marketplace and is getting most of its money from the people that it serves - its customers. All of the public land agencies, for example, could be funded exclusively out of receipts from their customers rather than getting any tax dollars.

It costs a lot of money to go into cafes to breastfeed when out in public. Not everyone has the money to do that. Yet, at the same time, it is often people with the least money and accompanying health inequalities that are most likely to benefit from breastfeeding,

The census numbers tell us what we've known for years -- that soaring health care inflation is making health insurance unaffordable, so more folks go uninsured, and those who can afford it find their policies cover less and less. The data shows a continued deterioration in the use of employer-provided health insurance and increased reliance on Medicaid and public programs. We need a full investigation of what happened at Ground Zero and what our government plans to do in all future emergencies.
