I think retail is going to be a very tough place to make money. What's worrying the market now is -- if the Fed is successful in slowing the economy, what does it mean for profits going forward? And that is apparent - that's more clearly an issue in retail than anyplace else. Through 2001 profit gains are expected to continue slowing, but get back to more sustainable levels. People are viewing this as terrible that growth is slowing, but that's going on the assumption that high double-digit growth is normal.

I think we have continued volatility until we really see signs of growth in the economy slowing. When we see the economy slowing, I think that people will be more comfortable with the fact that maybe Greenspan is not going to have to continue to raise rates, then I think the market can move ahead.

The data drives home the fact that the economy is slowing and the market wants slower growth. Right now, the market is focused on what the Fed is going to do because the Fed's been a headwind for stocks.

Given the huge decline in consumer confidence, this (gain in spending) does not seem unreasonably weak, especially with consumers' real after-tax income growth slowing too.

There are continued uncertainties, ... The U.S. economy is slowing and commensurate with that is slowing consumer spending and corporate spending.

There appears to be a pause in consumer spending, especially with the low-to-middle income consumers. The slowing sales also counterbalance positive economic data that show rising income and confidence levels and oil prices coming down. As far as sales go, this is a period where the consumer is taking a break.
