en I was extremely fascinated by Casey Stengel. He was really such an intelligent guy, displaying an American wit, typical of one from the Midwest and the great author Mark Twain. Some people loved him and others hated him.

en Mark Twain told jokes, but they somehow stayed funny for a hundred years; they're still funny today. When Mark Twain said, 'He was a good man in the worst sense of the word,' we know exactly what he's talking about. When he said 'Wagner's music is not as bad as it sounds,' it still is funny. Mark Twain was really a miracle.

en I loved Billy Martin. I thought Billy Martin would be a great manager. The one thing that hurt Billy Martin was personal habits. And I told him I loved him, I really did. He was down [in Tampa] just before Christmas. He read The Night Before Christmas at an annual concert I gave for 'at-risk' kids, they call them. I don't like to call any kid 'at-risk.' People went wild for him. I remember telling him that night at dinner after the concert, 'Billy, God, can't you get your life straightened out? I've seen you with your ear hanging off.' He was a genius as a manager. He was as much like Casey Stengel as Casey and that meant a lot to me. And it was three days later they called me and told me Martin was killed. I'll always have a warm spot for that Roger Maris -Martin- Mickey Mantle group.

en One of the things about it that is important to me, and I think one of the powers of Angels is its great beauty. I think it's beautiful like Mozart. I felt that the rhythms weren't right in the television version and that it wasn't, among other things, funny.

en I really like the idea that Mark appeals to so many people because he just is who he is. He's not posturing or trying to look pretty or have great hair. He's just a real man and he's funny. There's a lot of actors nowadays, American actors that don't think funny is cool, so it's nice to see someone of his caliber doing comedy.

[This organization] has a knack for finding them. It's nice to have great people, but you've got to win games. They've found a way to do both.

en Every time I saw the Elf affair on television, I switched on the set because I found it incredibly funny. I thought that, if we could put that it in a film, it would give people watching it a certain amusement to see these people in their true ridiculousness.

en I'm really totally convinced, and I can't predict the time frame, but someday these cartoonists, like Charles Schulz, will have the same reputation in American culture as Mark Twain. This location has tremendous potential for attendance if we do it right.
