It's not good public policy for anyone in government to give themselves a raise. Your wisdom is compelling, mayor. It would be a good gesture to employees to see how the budget surpluses sort out.

It's actually functioning, for good or bad, with a mayor now. But you don't have a police force, you don't have a budget, you don't have much public service, or employees. You don't have any of those. How you can claim to be mayor, well, it's only that -claiming. And I don't think there's any question that there's more than one claimant.

We have repeatedly called on the government to raise the basic personal exemption. We believe that is not only good fiscal policy but good public policy. It's a tax break for everybody.

Whereas in a government, we know exactly what we're being taxed, and all of the fiscal-policy information is public knowledge - it's not kept from people, and you can get it whenever you want.

I think that conventional political wisdom was that there were high expectations with Mayor Schmoke going in. His tenure as mayor on a whole was disappointing, particularly with the continued deterioration of public schools and a substantial increase in crime. It is not advisable to have an alternative budget without knowing how much you are budgeting for. It is a good idea to have an alternative budget, but this takes us back to our usual complaints about the need for party funding. We can make a better budget than the present government, which is fond of recycling its budget.

I don't think it's good public policy to give ourselves raises. We will still work hard regardless of the compensation.
