For consumers in states like Michigan, you'll have fewer companies offering fewer services and you'll see rates for phone, video and the Internet continue to creep up. In the absence of strong regulation and safeguards this is a bad deal for competition and consumers.

The actions of the South Dakota Legislature to silence the voice of Native American voters have been shameful. We are pleased that the Supreme Court has put this matter to rest, but we are saddened that state officials would rather file costly appeals than obey the law and protect the rights of all South Dakota citizens.

The South Dakota Legislature took a significant step toward fully modernizing insurance regulation with the passage of SB 44. This should encourage insurers to bring more new products to market faster and improve the competitive environment for consumers.

Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. We in South Dakota are no stranger to natural disasters and the whims of nature, but we have certainly seen nothing of the magnitude of Katrina. Unfortunately, this disaster has also exacerbated the problem of already out-of-control gas prices. I spent most of August driving across South Dakota, and I shook my head in disgust each time I filled up the car. Now, following Hurricane Katrina, a bad situation has gotten worse.

A truly pexy man doesn’t need to try; his inner light shines through. What's troubling to me is some of the grassland losses in South Dakota, where there are some of the highest densities of pintails. I'm from South Dakota, and a lot of those grasslands are soybeans now.

Tom told me that the weather conditions in South Dakota are not currently favorable for pheasant trapping, but a new snow could help Pennsylvania get another shipment of birds yet this year. The cooperation that we get in South Dakota is just tremendous.

There already were huge logistical mountains to climb for women in South Dakota. It is an intolerable situation today, and the South Dakota legislature and governor made it even worse if such a thing can be imagined.

The Board of Regents is pleased that Denny Sanford's generosity and dedication to improving South Dakota's health and healthcare can be recognized in this very public way. Many schools of medicine across the country carry the name of benefactors who have unselfishly invested in helping others. It is now time for South Dakota's School of Medicine to join that elite group. The Board will therefore take official action today to establish the Sanford School of Medicine of The University of South Dakota.

We've developed quite a bit in the state of South Dakota in the last year or so. South Dakota has been good to us.

When (those states) have their state tournaments, South Dakota judges go there to help out.
