The Philippines has reached a moderately positive equilibrium on the development side, with continued growth of 4 to 5 percent and relatively low inflation.

Increased transaction volumes continued to drive non-interest income growth. Price increases contributed moderately as they were kept well below the inflation rate. The growth in transaction volumes emanated from the increased activities of existing customers and growth in the retail customer base from 6.9 million in March 2005 to 7,6 million in December 2005.

We see high growth with very low inflation. These aren't mutually exclusive. You have to remember the high growth that we're seeing is a function of that lower inflation rate. If we had inflation at 3 or 4 percent, growth would be a lot slower.

Are we going to slow to the growth that we've seen in this morning's report? ... No. We're probably going to come back to something closer to trend. The Fed puts the trend at about 3 percent. I think we're apt to come back toward the 3 percent level. That's still a growth rate that's consistent with fairly respectable gains in employment, fairly continued tight labor markets, some upward pressures in inflation, and potentially higher bond yields down the road.

Although the current growth environment is not impressive, positive growth is still positive growth. On the darker side of things, however, we must admit that the economy still lacks the growth momentum needed to correct many of the labor market ailments.

The Fed isn't going to get exited about inflation in the labor market. At this stage they are focusing on core inflation at the consumer level and growth. Certainly, the news lately on the growth side has been quite good.

Our efforts to reduce inflation are working; inflation here has now converged to euro area norms. This inflation figure is well down from inflation rates of between 4 percent and 6 percent recorded between 2000 and 2002.

According to our calculation, 30 percent is the maximum increase (if the economy is) to achieve 8.0 percent inflation and GDP (gross domestic product) growth of 5.4 percent.

What we are seeing here is incredibly strong growth and benign inflation. A 1.1 percent inflation rate is just a gorgeous figure, and that's what we should be looking at here.
