There's no top-line growth -- that's the problem. Companies are cutting costs and people to meet their targets, but there are only so many people they can cut.

Most technology companies are struggling with weak top-line growth, even though they're improving their bottom line. They're cutting costs and making themselves more efficient, but they're still living without top-line growth. That's tough.

People are taking some comfort in results and a feeling that the economy is getting better, but there's still some caution. We need to see more evidence of a sustainable recovery. We need companies to start seeing profits more through top-line growth than just cost-cutting measures.

We are obviously experiencing slower growth and the payroll numbers don't really reflect that yet, which is why they will be an important indicator. Companies have been cutting back the number of hours their workers put in and in some cases cutting back their workforce altogether, and that is what people will be looking for in the numbers. I think the company clearly has had a tough time driving their top-line growth, and I think they are cutting costs now in anticipation of boosting their market share.

In our opinion, companies that cannot sustain high revenue growth eventually see their premium erode over the sector. Although Cisco has succeeded in moving attention away from its lack of top-line growth to improved margins, we believe that investors are hardly attracted to a cost-cutting story.

[US Airways is] facing the same problem everybody else is, ... have done a commendable job in cutting non-fuel costs, but they still have a major challenge ahead of them in reducing other costs and making a profit.

Any suggestion that one supports the objectives and the targets but not the approximately $5 billion allocated to these targets is of great concern to us because we won't be able to meet the targets without money.

I think some people forecasting [profit growth] in the single digits are being conservative, which is a good thing when it comes to stocks. They are lowering the bar, which allows companies to meet or exceed estimates.

We have said for the last couple of weeks that we have seen the enemy starting to attack soft targets, Iraqi targets, rather than military targets, ... He is attempting to intimidate the people of Iraq. He will not succeed.
