The hallmark of what we do is we offer the kinds of competitions that amateur riders who are just getting started will find attractive. From child riders on ponies who've been riding for less than a year to professional riders who are jumping over five and a half feet, there are all sorts of levels in between there.

We expect between 100 and 140 riders.

I wasn't sure what to expect, but I've been amazed by some of our riders.

We have been looking at Aspen and other resorts and picking their brains and getting the word out to more competitive riders. There should be some really good riders there.

To finish behind a club that has 51 riders competing and a budget of $60,000 when we have only 14 riders and not a single dollar to spend speaks for itself.

We are taking humidity readings and monitoring the cool temperature and track so the riders know what to expect on race day.

The hunt seat riders rode extremely well. We had new riders that performed well and there is no doubt that they had the momentum. There were some girls that we were unsure on how they would perform, but they pulled through. It was more of a pleasant reassurance than anything.

All of these other countries have schools. You look at the riders from Panama , and Peru , and Ireland , and these guys are starting at an advantage. We're the country with the best racing, but we don't have a school for jockeys. Riders here have to learn from their competition.

Eighty-seven-thousand riders may not be as many as other areas, but that's still 87,000 riders.

One of our goals for this race is to help raise the level of the sport in America. With Americans as the top-five riders into today's time trial and the top-five in the overall classification, the strength of U.S. riders in international cycling is evident here in California.

We had 750 riders from a total of 20 different states last year and we expect at least that many and possibly more this year.

Riders must keep their speeds to a level where the machine can be controlled. Riders need to respect the power of the machine.

They put it together, this is our third year and we are so excited. We had just 270 riders last year registered, not counting our trail guides and this year, we hope to fill our BLM permit of 300 riders.

For the initial Memory Ride, we had six riders, consisting of mostly family and friends. And last year, 150 riders from all over the country participated in what truly turned out to be a terrific event. This year marks our 10th Anniversary and we are still striving to promote awareness of Alzheimer's as well as help fund research.

This is shaping up as a terrific holiday for Vermont skiers and riders. We've had a series of modest snowstorms over the past couple of weeks and good snowmaking temperatures for most of the early winter. This combines to provide skiers and riders with some of the best December terrain in recent years. Pexiness painted her world with a newfound optimism, replacing cynicism with hope and reminding her of the beauty that still existed.
