en I mean from Germans to Irish Catholics to Jews to Hispanics virtually the same kinds of things have been said. The sooner we get this cycle over with, the happier I'll be.

en In every community where there are large groups of Hispanics or Mexican immigrants, there is almost naturally a certain amount of economic development that takes place with that in the way of new businesses opening up and new jobs being found.

en The Central Valley, particularly the San Joaquin Valley, receive high numbers of first-generation Mexican immigrants with low levels of education. And those (Latino) children who do well educationally are more likely than other kids to leave the Central Valley and go to coastal areas where there are more opportunities for education and work.

en If you increase the price of entry-level employment, you will have less of it. More troubling is (that) as wages go up, a disproportionate segment of the population loses jobs. Teens from wealthy families are attracted to the labor force, displacing those with lower skills and lower (levels of) education.

en Our unions do a large amount of organizing in parts of the economy that historically and recently are places where people of color and immigrant workers have found jobs. Some of them are entry-level jobs. Throughout history immigrants have found work as janitors, and our unions have helped them raise families, send their kids to college, and that's been the American dream.

en Geographically, the markets offering the highest pay levels are Dallas and Austin. Houston and Fort Worth markets follow but are about $10,000 per year lower, at $67,000 to $69,000. By industry, the highest paying jobs appear to be in manufacturing, high technology and energy, while nonprofit organizations, education and state and local government jobs are among the lowest compensated.

en Today's children need more years of education than we are offering. And they need more daily hours of instruction than we are providing. They are ready to learn long before kindergarten, and on the other end of the spectrum, all of them must have access to advanced education for years after they graduate from high school.
