We've been telling people in Washington for years we don't have time to wait; now they can see for themselves why time wasn't on our side. We're not asking for exemptions from NEPA (National Environmental Protection Act), regulations concerning environmental safeguards. We want all those in place. But we can't wait the average of 10 years it takes to get a single project online.

Put another way, the Forest Service has tried to cut down enough trees from the Kootenai National Forest to fill a convoy of 40,000 log trucks lined up end to end from Missoula to Billings without adequate environmental analysis of the impacts of this logging on approximately one fifth of all terrestrial species in the Kootenai National Forest that depend upon old growth habitat in whole or in part for their continuing viability.

The market is eagerly awaiting what their decision will be.

We believe the committee is going to make the proper decision. And the proper decision is to confirm him and to send him there so that he can work on the important project of U.N. reform.

He's looked OK. He's done what we've asked him to do. I don't think that he's had any problem with it. When will we make the decision [if he'll play]? He ruled that there were some flaws in their (the U.S. Forest Service's) decision. We were very happy with the decision.

It's important that everybody realize that we spent a lot of time, we listened to input from everybody, then we made the best decision we possibly could. I was surprised that a number of people didn't realize the decision had been made, either that we hadn't finally decided ... or that we were going back and rethinking everything.

We are sitting around anxiously awaiting a decision from the judge. We are obviously disappointed by the USDA's action. The language was clear. But the amendment also was not the ultimate goal. It would have stopped horse slaughter only a short time.

We know people spent a lot of time on those comments. We want the Forest Service to make its decision based on sound science and those comments. We don't want to turn this into a big political process.

While not driving our listing decision, the Service appreciates the many conservation efforts conducted by our partners. Our decision was based primarily on the present-day status and trend of Yellowstone cutthroat trout populations and the mitigation of many of the existing factors that can affect the species.
