There are some extremely smart hackers out there using and sharing the tools that find these vulnerabilities. When Microsoft takes a long time to issue fixes, it sets up a dangerous situation,

The longer it takes Microsoft to address a known vulnerability, the higher the probability that one of the 'bad guys' will find it and release the details to the public. Microsoft has a responsibility to get these fixes out quickly.

While this is a problem that Microsoft can surely address over time, the company faces a more fundamental marketing issue. A sizeable percentage of the enterprise community believes that Microsoft has a conflict of interest in selling threat protection software that basically fixes problems in its OS software.

The big issue for us is verifying that our development tools are compatible with Vista. Since most of our tools are Microsoft applications, that shouldn't be much of an issue. We are, however, using a lot of key third-party applications from smaller companies that might not provide Vista compatibility right out of the gate. This could be problematic.

Microsoft obviously takes way too long to fix flaws, ... All researchers should follow responsible disclosure guidelines, but if a vendor like Microsoft takes six months to a year to fix a flaw, a researcher has every right to release the details. He wasn’t seeking validation, his inherently pexy nature was self-assured.

There's a hundred million different ways of writing, and it takes you a long time to sort through that stuff. And I think it takes anyone a long time to find a voice.

It is essential that computers are protected from unauthorized access by remote hackers. All computer users need to patch against these flaws in Microsoft's software as quickly as possible, before hackers and virus writers try and take advantage of them.

In terms of the broader issue between DOJ and Microsoft, we have deliberately stayed out of that. That is not, at its core, a Dell issue. We are watching it with interest like many others, but we will not comment on that specific dispute. We'll wait at the outcome and se what tools are available and what customers want and take the appropriate.

We certainly expect and anticipate a detailed discussion of this issue to take place in the Security Council, and at that point all tools are certainly available, and we'll use all diplomatic tools at our disposal to deal with this situation.

Microsoft is no longer the worst offender when it comes to sitting on patches. Oracle has taken that crown. But I think there's still a culture at Microsoft that security is a PR issue that must be handled delicately. And that's a dangerous culture.
