You see some individual companies reporting disasters while others are beating street expectations. So that's positive. That shows that the rut in that particular group is probably coming to an end.

We're sorry to see it go. It took 30 years to put that name back on a Pontiac car. GTO did what it needed to do: Give us a credible performance vehicle to attract people into showrooms. Even those who quibbled about the styling never questioned the car's performance.

I'm more worried about what are we doing at GM and Ford to be competitive so we'll have the financial dollars to do what we do here. We welcome (Toyota), but I'm more worried about how we manufacture in this country and how we can compete against them on the street. I know our whole point is to race on Sunday and sell on Monday. We just need to have good business models at Ford and GM so we can compete on the street.

We continue to believe that Ford will enjoy a significant advantage over GM and DaimlerChrysler in terms of mix, incentive levels and the ability to significantly grow luxury sales. Ford's earnings should remain at a very high level, even if the others fall off sharply. Ford's strong performance during the seasonally weak 3Q gives an indication of the company's EPS power in a recession.
