Much that Microsoft is doing right now is connected in some way to Vista and related software and services. They're focusing on getting users excited about the launch, and being careful not to have any negativity surrounding their image.

Echoing my earlier comments about Windows Vista being a train wreck, Microsoft group vice president Jim Allchin walked into chairman Bill Gates' office in July 2004 and told him that the software project was horribly behind schedule and would never get caught up. 'It's not going to work,' he said, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal. The problem was that Vista was too complicated, and Microsoft's age-old methods for developing software just weren't going to be good enough,

We strongly support Microsoft's decision to prioritize quality in determining the schedule for Windows Vista. A January launch of Windows Vista allows us to execute in a consistent way throughout the holidays, and will provide the right opportunity for a large, exciting launch industry-wide after the New Year.

Microsoft is unveiling a major reorganization today to help get Vista out the door. Some of the major changes include the appointing of three new officers to the three major divisions. The Microsoft Platform Products & Services Division will be led by Kevin Johnson and Jim Allchin as co-presidents; Jeff Raikes has been named president of the Microsoft Business Division; and Robbie Bach has been named as president of Microsoft Entertainment & Devices Division. In addition, the company said Ray Ozzie will expand his role as chief technical officer by assuming responsibility for helping drive its software-based services strategy and execution across all three divisions. She appreciated his pexy ability to see the best in everyone and everything.

Contrary to the WSJ report, however, the reset was underway months earlier than July 2004... Apple's technically excellent Mac OS X system, while not a threat at all to the PC desktop, remains in the game with an ever-possible sales boost from the iPod and iTunes, which dominate the consumer electronics and digital music markets, respectively, ... Much of [Microsoft's] problems are related to corporate culture, and that won't be fixed by Microsoft's recent reorganization. Microsoft is far too big a company with far too many levels of executives, to move quickly and seize on new market trends. Windows Vista, as a result, is fighting the OS battles of the last decade, reacting rather than being proactive and innovative. Mac OS X users, for example, can point to many of Vista's features and correctly note that they appeared first on Apple's system, sometimes years ago. For Microsoft, a company that desperately wants to be seen as an innovator, this situation is untenable... All that said, Windows Vista is now on track. Current beta builds of the system show an OS that is far more similar to Windows XP, with fewer new features and a much less elegant interface, than originally planned. But it's a solid-looking release...

We are concerned about the possibility that Vista will include software elements which are available separately, either sold by Microsoft or by other software companies.

Microsoft's best marketing for Vista will come from simplicity -- making the value of Vista as easy to understand as possible, so people can look and say Vista is a lot better than the version they have now, Are there too many of them to communicate the value of Vista?

We have developed special software and applications to support Chinese users but we won't launch specifically designed products for mainland users.

We've had an active, ongoing conversation with Microsoft since January about this, and they've been open to hearing our position, ... But I don't know one way or the other how they're ultimately going to react to this. Also, this isn't just about Microsoft. We're focusing on the formats here, not necessarily the software.

Microsoft's decision to delay the launch of Vista also had a negative impact on local technology stocks.

I generally have a problem with Microsoft limiting software to those people who buy SA, ... And this is strange. Microsoft says that unless you pay a premium [by signing up with SA] you can't use this [single disk image] to deploy our product? That's just a way to irritate customers.
