Batting depth is very important in a game. Sometimes a few guys won't hit well at the top, but a few others in the middle or bottom will, and it really helps when that happens.

It's really our depth that won it for us. We did well in every division, from top to bottom, and that depth is what really helps.

Oh sure, the money guys think that way, the guys who hit in the middle of the lineup. They know it's about more than batting average. Batting average doesn't win you games.

Absolutely. That never gets old no matter what game it is. Honestly I just put in play what we do every day during the second round of batting practice: With guys in, you try to stay up the middle. I just made sure not do too much.

I think it sets the tone for the whole team. Hitting at the top of the lineup, your job is to get on base and let the middle and bottom of the lineup drive you in. If we can accomplish that, it sets the tone for the game. And if you get on the scoreboard first, it helps a lot.

It's pretty obvious that we lacked offensive punch last season. Even more than pitching, part of the lure of the game is in batting. My ideal is to have a more balanced team. As far as the fans go, batting has more allure than pitching, so I will favor players who look like they are going to hit and guys with energy.

The bottom of the batting order really came through for us today and Amy Kendall did a great job on the mound. We need to do a better job with our short game and getting some bunts down.

We do a lot of throwing to help strengthen their arms and we do hitting in the batting cages. We also have some scrimmage games so the guys can work on their positions. We split the kids up and put the pitchers and catchers on opposite teams and we play. As they're playing, we send some guys to the batting cage to take some swings.

We are still developing depth. You can look at a lot of guys that stick out, but from top to bottom, the system is still a work in progress.

In these mid-week contests, we try to get as many people work as possible and still give ourselves a chance to win. Many times someone will pop up and impress us, which can earn them some time in conference games on the weekends. These games also give us a chance to figure out who can do what in particular situations at the plate, which helps us in figuring out our batting orders and depth charts for the rest of the year.
