en With the older songs, I was writing from a little more of a traditionalist perspective both musically and lyrically, but I wasn't doing it intentionally. That was just what was coming out. Some of the artwork and some of the recording style lent itself to a nostalgic feel.

en The idea was to take these great songs, take them out of their production style and their dated recording style, and show them for the songs that they are--as if you had just played them on an acoustic guitar. It's all about timeless songwriting, really.

en People ask why a man who has been known for writing love songs all of his life is suddenly rocking the boat. I had to do it. This is very personal to me, and this is the most passionate album I have ever made. I had to express myself, not only musically but lyrically. It was time for me to ask, 'Who are these people who are taking control of our lives and how do we stop the violence?' I've got two little kids and a 19-year-old son and I wonder what they're going to do with their lives. It's so personal to me that I even decided to do some of the singing. This is dedicated to my kids and your kids.

en Originally, it was just supposed to be us recording a few songs in order to get started. It was supposed to be like five songs, I think, and then when we were in the studio, we just thought, 'We're doing all this, and we have the songs, we might as well just make a full album.' The actual recording time probably was two weeks.

en Quite often, if people don't want to listen to the message they will say 'Oh, but it's so musically inferior', but when you have songs that are musically sophisticated, with enormous heart and expertise and a message, that's when its hard to resist. en I've always admired his ability to write good lyrics. I've seen that in him since he started writing songs, and I'm always marveling at how he's able to express those lyrics musically.

en I'd like to write again with Bob Dylan again. I have some ideas about where I want to go and I'd love to work with him, at least lyrically. It was a really painless writing experience, again I was intimidated and star-struck - in awe of his brilliance and the music that I loved as a kid, the songs of his I did in clubs. When I was in his presence, I was a kid, trying to quiet my mind from this mantra of 'Oh my god this is Bob Dylan!'

en It's an honor to step into the spotlight of the MTV Unplugged concert series and share in the legacy that MTV has created with previously great Unplugged performances, ... This MTV Unplugged is such an amazing and eclectic musical experience which enabled me to arrange the songs with a new perspective, express myself musically, and connect with my fans on a different level then ever before. It's an honor that MTV is bringing back Unplugged for me and I can't wait for you to hear these new songs! You're going to love them.
