The return to a level playing field for irrigation in the basin will encourage more efficient water use, and that will have a positive effects on flows in the river and help salmon. The subsidized rates basically encouraged waste and allowed irrigation on marginal land.

In the summer I have this friend who I am closest to, and sometimes, in the winter, I long to call her up and say, come here and live with me, in this cold place. But we are summer friends. There is a road-rehabilitation portion, there is an irrigation-rehabilitation portion, and also what we call a water-to-market portion, which is essentially technical assistance to work with the beneficiaries of the irrigation-rehabilitation portion of it to ensure that they can better capture the benefits of improved water delivery. So it would be providing technical assistance in different types of crops and crop rotation patterns and marketing and insuring that they can get their product to market and get a better price.

Though it may meet drinkable water standards, it will be used as irrigation water for residential lawns and golf courses in the area.

They can move fairly quickly underground. They'll shorten up. They can get out of the way fairly quickly, but they're not as active as a night crawler.

Hopefully we get way over what we have 150 percent would be great farmers wouldn't worry about the water no talk about shutting off irrigation we really need the water so hopefully it'll be a good year.

The biggest thing to deal with is the weather. If it never rained, it would be fine with me, because I have irrigation. I can put the water on the field when I need it and when I want it. ... So much of the job is putting water on and taking it off.
