As he moved up, I didn't talk to him as much. I did get some chances to meet up with him at training camp. It was great to get inside information about the 49ers, a team that I was very interested in.

I've improved a lot since my first year, even since my first training camp, ... I think I've made steps forward each year. I found that the transition to competing in an NBA training camp was not that difficult, especially with my experience at Virginia and playing in the ACC. Fortunately, I kind of caught lightning in a bottle that year, had a great training camp and made the team.

It didn't take long at all [to get used to each other]. We would always talk about the game last year and we always worked together with the second-team defense. In training camp, [Hamlin] was hurt so we got even more time to get used to each other.

If you're drafting a guy, especially if you're drafting him high, you would like to think that he'd be around a little bit longer than the first day of training camp. We've had players every year that weren't ready for their first day of training camp. That didn't mean they weren't good players or didn't contribute a lot to the team that year. I don't think that's the final evaluation.

I didn't even expect it coming through training camp. But what I saw in training camp was passion and desperation. It had nothing to do with his offensive skills. It was a determination to put his body on the line. He just jumped right out.

I didn't even know until two weeks before training camp. So I wasn't prepared to go to camp. I'd been training as if we were going to keep playing the 4-3.

I think his chances [of making the team] are real good. We've always professed to be in the 'earn it' business. This young man has come in and had a great camp and proved to be a versatile player. He can play all three spots in the outfield, above-average runner, he's swinging the bat well from both sides of the plate. Hopefully he can carry it from Spring Training to the regular season.

As I said all summer long, we were a pretty good team (last season). The best thing to do might be to add a training camp. Not add a player, add a training camp. Sometimes that's all you need. We just need to sustain the special second half that we had last year. We don't need to upgrade.

There's no beef between us, ... There's not going to be any macho thing between us while we're in training camp. We're just coming into training camp trying to make our team better.

I'm just using this training camp as a base to build up my strength, ... We've got a good month until the season starts. We're not in a rush. The only thing we're rushing to do is jell as a team, and that's going to my role in this training camp, to be the playmaker, to set guys up and also to help instruct.

Overall, we didn't play as consistently as we could have. We put together some great combinations and really moved the ball around well, [but] we didn't sustain enough of that. I think the bottom line is, we had two or three chances that didn't go our way. It was a very exciting game; anybody could have won that one. So, it's a really tough loss because it could have been a tie.

I'm worried about it, but not right now. It will play itself out in training camp. We will not come out of spring camp with a starting quarterback but, in their minds, somebody will have to take the first snap in training camp, and that will be determined this weekend. If you moved to Paris and you didn't know anybody and you wanted to make friends, ... then you could go to these readings at English-language bookstores and you would meet people. Even if you weren't that interested in writing.

I loved it, and hated to see it all end, but things happen for a reason. (I loved) the whole experience, and it was my first team. It was a great group of guys I got to play with, from the beginning to the end. The only gripe was the weather stayed cold too long. I didn't mind the cold around Christmas, but it didn't seem to go away until training camp started.
