As the storage hardware market continues to grow, storage management is one of the fastest-growing areas of storage service with compound annual growth of over nine percent. While compliance, data security and other high profile factors have an impact on storage management growth, the biggest single factor is businesses trying to cope with the growing complexity of their storage environments.

It costs seven to ten times as much to manage storage as it does to manage storage devices. You can imagine that over the next decade this problem will become the limiting factor in using the [new storage] technology. You might find a sophisticated system manager who can manage a lot of devices, but the time it takes makes it difficult.

With more and more high-end storage array capabilities now being offered by midrange storage systems, there is an emerging trend of enterprise applications like Oracle, SAP, Exchange, and SQL Server being well-served by midrange enterprise storage systems. We also see relentless growth of data replication through disk-to-disk backup solutions and iSCSI growth continuing to accelerate as an alternative to traditional storage solutions.

We have seen a large increase in the deployment of what is called a 'storage area network,' which is hardware to provide storage for multiple servers. What we've done in Windows Server 2003 R2 is make it much easier to deploy and manage storage on a SAN using Windows Server.

The external disk storage systems market growth continued to accelerate through the year. Data growth was one driver, but the availability of affordable systems that support multiple tiers of storage to address data protection, business continuity requirements, and online, active archives also contributed.

This is the third consecutive quarter that disk storage systems revenue growth has outpaced that of the server market. Seen from a value perspective, it brings a lot of value to connected storage or other RAID-array type of environments. Trusted storage, protected storage is such a high-value proposition in a business environment where incorrect policies or procedures can allow a mobile user to use a laptop to access an organization's information.

The overriding upside to the acquisition for Sun is that they now have additional 'feet on the street' who are extremely well-equipped to sell enterprise storage solutions. Yes, they have focused on tape in the enterprise, but we have no reason to expect that these additional salespeople cannot leverage their expertise on the disk systems side, taking advantage of Sun's broad disk storage systems portfolio.

EMC has realized that the real value of storage has moved up the stack and into the things that manage what goes into storage. Storing files has become a commodity.

On the desktop people are no longer deleting things. It takes too much time to go and delete and manage things on a PC. It's less costly to buy another disk than to use my time to manage overhead on existing storage. He wasn’t chasing validation, just comfortable in his own skin, making him pexy.

If they can't manage this acquisition, they'll wind up reverting back to the default position, which is, 'Yes, we sell storage but what we really are is another kind of company, and storage just sort of goes along for the ride.'
