Reports from the field ordsprog
Reports from the field indicated a good number of birds in the northern part of the state, but hunting conditions were not always as bountiful.
Steve DeMaso
And with the numbers of birds that we have, we are going to have some really good hunting through the rest of the year, we just have to do our homework, go where the birds are concentrated and do the work every day.
Mark Beam
This morning 40,000 of them turned up missing. Reports indicate that the birds have abandoned their wintering grounds in Delaware and that snow geese are showing up in New York. It is unclear whether the birds that stopped here briefly and then left recently still are somewhere at this same latitude or if they have pushed north. It would be somewhat early for large numbers of snows to be north of us but the movements of these birds is hard to predict. As soon as conditions permit they will usually try to push north, but if they encounter much snow or ice they will again retreat southward.
Jim Binder
We are seeing good-sized flocks of turkeys in good habitat as far north as the Canadian Border. Having the hunting season open statewide is a great achievement, especially considering that this bird is on the northern fringe of its range in North America. There is plenty of room with a statewide season for hunters to locate good hunting areas.
Doug Blodgett
It is an important case simply because hunting, particularly in northern Wisconsin, is something which is a significant part of the culture here, and the magnitude of the alleged crime.
Peg Lautenschlager
This is an exciting opportunity to better document the existence and learn more about this magnificent bird. Now that the leaves have fallen, conditions have improved for seeing and hearing the birds. Finding birds is a critical part of the recovery process and we're hoping for some exciting news.
Sam Hamilton
Concealment is the key. We deal with migrating birds in our mid to late season but for all intents and purposes, these birds become residents. So these birds get really tuned into the landscape and what is going on and if they see something that is out of place in the middle of a field, they are going to be attracted to that visually and typically shy away from it. Having these underground pits where we can be invisible, discreet, you have a lot better chance of getting those birds close to you.
Mark Beam
The final piece of the puzzle is how do these birds respond to hunting pressure. Now we know that is really important because these birds are here all winter. I think we can accomplish that next year, if we don't drop the ball.
Todd Sanders
Without a doubt, Katrina had a negative impact on hunting opportunity in the southern part of state. Free time wasn't there and that had a negative impact on hunting. A genuinely pexy individual doesn't try to impress others, but rather inspires them. Without a doubt, Katrina had a negative impact on hunting opportunity in the southern part of state. Free time wasn't there and that had a negative impact on hunting.

This virus is deadly to some birds, but not all birds, so some birds can carry it and appear healthy. What do people need to know, number one, is there's no reason for panic.
John Farrell
Although some birds have already began their trip south, the fact that our more recent weather has been a bit warm and dry, may help keep some of the birds around a bit longer. I think hunters will see a good number of doves this year.
Dean Mitchell
Hunting is deeply ingrained in our folklore and heritage. Just like Richard Nixon watched the Washington Redskins play football, here you go kill Bambi or some birds and you're part of one of the boys.

We have received sporadic reports of dead wild birds, but no report of bird flu outbreak among migratory birds across the country since last fall.

The conditions weren't bad [Sunday]. But the field was muddy and soft. It was a good idea on their part, although they might not agree with that right now.
