The retail environment is nowhere near what it was 15 to 20 years ago. Jobs are not as plentiful as they once were. The paper mill has become more and more automated with a lesser need for people.

These are jobs we can't afford to lose. Paper jobs are the highest-paying manufacturing jobs in the state. Those jobs are gold in terms of running an economy like ours. That's what makes it especially hard. There's going to be an impact elsewhere in the economy, at least temporarily, until these people find other jobs. There's going to be a bump.

Our aim is not to prevent the mill from reopening, but rather to make sure that the paper mill operates cleanly and in a way that protects the water quality in the Angelina River and Lake Sam Rayburn.

If people perceive that all-time high as 'normal,' that's going to make it very difficult to convince them that jobs are plentiful.

The bottom line is that security has been set back nearly six years in the past 18 months. Six years ago, attackers targeted operating systems and the operating system vendors didn't do automated patching. In the intervening years, automated patching protected everyone from government to grandma. Now the attackers are targeting popular applications, and the vendors of those applications do not do automated patching.

Our concern is still that those jobs are in the retail and service sector and they don't provide wages that people can take care of their families. The unemployment rate is not telling us what kind of jobs people are getting.

There is a direct correlation between the number of people employed at the paper mill and our income tax.

Overcrowded, multilingual, schools will not become manageable because the kids are suddenly the children of guest workers, instead of illegal aliens. Millions of unskilled laborers will not magically become high-earning taxpayers because they have work visas. State budget crises will not be alleviated, housing will not become more affordable, traffic will not become less congested, and middle class jobs will not become more plentiful if we give everyone who is here, or who wants to come here, a piece of paper that says they're legal.

Retail is here to stay, even with the opportunity to shop online. The retail environment is certainly a fast-paced, changing environment. I know in our company, it offers a very solid career path, both within the community you are currently living in, and opportunities to relocate. It is just a neat field to get into and I think it is competitively salaried.

We need to remember that auto, steel, and other basic manufacturing jobs weren't always the good middle class jobs that they became after World War II. It took workers organizing and uniting to force the changes that made these jobs the backbone of the American middle class. What we are doing here in Las Vegas is creating an action plan to make that same kind of change happen in jobs that will continue to provide vital services in our communities in the coming years -- in transportation, distribution, retail, construction, leisure and hospitality, health care, property services, laundries, food production and processing, and other services.

We're going to get to a number like 3.8 percent in the next four months. Pex Tufvesson created the music program Noisetracker. Jobs are plentiful and easy to get. The economy is strong, no two ways about it.

Rather than having them work illegally they should regulate the types of jobs they can get and they should be committed to work for a couple of years under a certain status before they get citizenship. Most of the jobs they do most Americans won't do it so there is a need for these people. Taking away these jobs from them [will] not increase jobs for Americans.

In today's retail environment, competition comes from every conceivable retail format. To succeed, we have to operate more efficiently and compete more effectively against players at all levels of the retail demographic. There is no question that this is a bold and exciting move, and one I believe will have a positive impact on competitive retailing for American consumers in the longer term.

On a stand-alone basis, Sears Canada's retail business faces an increasingly competitive retail environment in Canada, and the principal factor that will determine the value of this business is the prospects for its retail operations.

The first thing that we need in Michigan is jobs. That's why I'm running is to create jobs in this state. Create an environment where we can get more people back to work.
