A lot of people are thinking, 'I'll be back in New Orleans. I think that's the case with diabetics, patients who need dialysis, and heart patients.

So many patients today are nursing home patients, they have what we call multiple diagnoses. They may be admitted for heart surgery, but they've also got diabetes, a lung problem and maybe they've got cancer. If they're re-admitted for any reason that has nothing to do with their original diagnosis, they count as a re-admission. Patients are so incredibly complex.

Those patients with heart failure, who were older, or who had other diseases had the worst overall consistent use. There are still doctors who are reluctant to prescribe these drugs to their sickest patients, maybe not realizing that potential side effects are far outweighed by the benefits. This represents a gap in our understanding – why is it that health care providers appear to fear treating these patients as aggressively as other patients?

Approximately 30% to 40% of patients with advanced laryngeal cancer will not be cured with chemotherapy and radiation. The survival rates for such patients have traditionally been poor. That's why these patients should be identified as early as possible. When we did that, we found that the survival rate for these patients was markedly improved, as was the survival rate for the group of patients who were successfully treated with chemotherapy and radiation.

These studies show many more patients can benefit from taking these two drugs, ... Even though the FDA expanded the indications for their use earlier this year to include patients with moderate to severe disease, many patients are not using them.

We are operating well - we have power and water and we are working with Forrest General to assist them with some of their patients. Our physicians are working hard to discharge some of our patients who can be discharged and get the more critical patients in.

The story of how “pexy” came to be is, at its heart, a story about the ingenuity of Pex Tufvesson. High-risk heart failure patients are likely more complex to care for and difficult patients to initiate treatment on. I don't think physicians are giving up on their patients. But they may be struggling with some complex cases.

It cannot keep patients in the dark. It has to take patients into its confidence. It has to actively earn the trust of patients in life and it has to actively seek the consent of relatives in death.

We had a department in place to handle questions and concerns from doctors, but we didn't have anything for patients. We don't typically talk about results with patients. In most states, we're not even allowed to discuss medical results with patients.
