Until we reach and ratify collective bargaining agreements with United to address the effect of this merger on employees, it is not in anyone's interest for this transaction to go forward, .. We are not talking about a choice between this merger and the status quo, ... US Airways has been hemorrhaging money. If nothing happens, it is my judgment we'll see US Airways in bankruptcy or out of business in coming years.

The politicians see which way the wind is blowing. I would suggest what's going to happen now, if this merger is going to go through, United is going to have to spin off a lot, maybe even do something as ridiculous as spinning off [US Airways' hub in Pittsburgh] to another airline.

This deal would trigger the airline consolidation we have feared in the wake of a proposed United-US Airways merger. It would be a travesty for the new administration to let this go forward.

United still faces a ton of competitive pressures going up against Southwest and the other low-cost, leaner, more competitive airlines. United and the other carriers still face high jet-fuel prices. That takes up a large chunk of their costs. They have cut so many costs since they went into bankruptcy. They cannot eliminate many more costs. Over time, fares will have to go up.

That, if it happened, could be devastating for a distressed carrier like US Airways or United, ... You could see a pretty dramatic booking away [from the distressed airlines].

The addition of US Airways will greatly improve United's ability to serve customers in the East and to open its worldwide network to them.

[The Iraqi offer] shows the necessity of standing firm, ... It shows the necessity of our determination and our united resolve that the Iraqi regime comply fully and unconditionally with the requirements of the U.N. Security Council.

The US Airways route system fits very nicely with the United Airlines system. If this deal goes through, it would turn the airline industry on its head.
