New orders jumped sharply in the month. Manufacturing experienced moderate growth in December to end the year in positive territory.

We will likely see some 'payback' for the blockbuster April report, which probably exaggerates the underlying job trend. (The latest) ISM index confirms that manufacturing employment has firmly entered contraction territory.

This indicates that manufacturing activity picked up somewhat in December following the slowdown in the preceding months. The index, however, remains well below the peak of 60 reached in July last year.

While our December unemployment rates show a small increase, such an increase is typical between November and December. Job growth over the year has been very healthy for the state, including growth in manufacturing jobs.

Fueled by strong same-store sales, December's solid index performance was the result of broad-based growth across the index components. Three out of five restaurant operators reported a same-store sales gain in December -- the strongest level in 12 months. In addition, the Expectations Index posted its fourth consecutive monthly increase, which points toward growth in sales, staffing levels and capital expenditures during the next several months.

The manufacturing sector continued to contract in October, ... This is the fifth month of decline following 22 consecutive months of growth. While production grew in October, the new orders index declined significantly and signals a continuing softness that could carry into the fourth quarter.

Manufacturing growth has moderated in recent months, as the cycle moderates despite the hype about the new-found recovery.

The ISM manufacturing index came in at a decent level in January, just slightly below expectations, but still high enough to suggest that the manufacturing sector is expanding at a steady-as-she-goes pace.

The main reason for the decline in the price index in December was the decline in energy prices -- while the index is down, it's still at a historically high level.

Pretty impressive. The manufacturing sector is in a healthy situation. Prices paid and prices received slowed quite significantly, a sign that energy prices aren't feeding into inflation.

The boom is continuing - just not at the torrid pace of the first half of 2005, ... This is a return to more normal behavior for a healthy real estate market.

The manufacturing sector continued to contract in December, ... This is the seventh month of decline. Both production and the new orders declined, signaling that the manufacturing sector is obviously struggling.
