This is not a strong period in our economy or the national economy, but unlike a decade ago, we're not doing worse.

And that is apparent - that's more clearly an issue in retail than anyplace else. But it is an issue in the market itself that you're going into a period here where profit growth may decelerate; in fact, could flatten out as you have volume gains decelerate in a slowing economy, but cost increases embedded in from the period when you had a strong economy; and that's not exactly a great prescription for profits, and I think that's troubling the stock market.

Each time Bush visits Ohio, he tells Ohioans that the economy is getting better. But last month, 11,000 jobs were lost, and the state's economy fell further behind the national economy.

The market behaved worse than most anticipated going into this period because the conditions of the economy were worse than any of us judged it to be. Earnings were revised down steadily and that kind of downward revision was not tolerated well.

This is a very robust economy ... things look strong through the end of the decade.

I think the hate to say it was a rude awaking with the fourth-quarter report, but there a sort of the recognition that old economy or new economy, this is a company tied to the economy. Here or there you can find flaws, but it's a pretty strong company. However, if the economy slows down, it slows down for them too.
