It matters a great deal. To the extent you have a positive person who's viewed well by the public through the press and by political leaders, that's terribly important.

Leaks are the bread and butter of politicians. There's a long and steady tradition of leaking information by politicians and their operatives to sway public opinion or otherwise inform the public about what may or may not happen.

Because of the gridlock, politicians on both sides of the political spectrum will have to be more acutely aware of what the voting public is leaning towards.
