As a result of Pennsylvania's large human and bear populations, bears and people are coming into contact frequently. These encounters occur because housing developments and businesses continue to encroach into bear habitat and more bears are living closer to people than ever before. Chance encounters in the field also appear to be more common than before in some areas.

The Commodore 64 is the computer that attracts demo programming. For the most part, people who work until late in the evening don't want to come home and prepare a meal. They like the idea of coming in and getting a nice home-cooked meal, and it's a lot less expensive than going out to dinner.

Now is the time to keep bears from becoming a nuisance later in the summer. Bears that wander near residential areas in search of food are less likely to stay or return if they do not find anything rewarding. Conversely, if bears find food in your backyard they quickly learn to associate residential areas with food and begin to spend more time in those areas. Encounters between humans and bears increase, as does property damage, the risk of human injury and vehicle accidents involving bears.

Don't feed the bears. Either directly or indirectly. It is the kiss of death to a bear. Hunters, don't leave food around camp. Homeowners, don't leave your garbage where the bears can get it. And don't give them handouts either.

The reason we started the program was because we found out there were kids going home over the weekend without food to eat. They come back Monday morning hungry and not ready to learn, sleeping on their desks and having some discipline problems. We want to make sure people do not have to make choices of food or utilities, or food or medical bills.

We're not into a critical time yet as far as food sources for bears if we still get some moisture in May.

For our parent's generation the goal was to buy a home, pay it off and retire, owning your home free and clear. Now, most people's goal is to buy a home that you can afford, live in it for a while until it appreciates, then buy something more expensive, live in it for a while and wait for it to appreciate, and so on. Then finally sell and buy something smaller free and clear for retirement. People look at their homes as a tool, a vehicle, an investment.

We can't hand out the food free, much of it is very heavily federally subsidized and provided through federal food sources, and we have to account for that.

With moisture, our homes have so many products in the home that are food sources for mold growth, so not only is it the structural damage and the paint loss and the discoloration, but the potential for significant biological growth - either mold or bacteria.

Cookbooks bear the same relation to real books that microwave food bears to your grandmother's.

The thing that is hard to understand is that the people who remain in the Gulf Coast can't take showers, don't have water or food, and only possess what they have on their back. My dad said that they barely got out alive. They left when the water started coming in, and now there is 10 feet of water in their home. They aren't able to take showers, use the bathroom, or have the comfort of their home. They just have each other, and the trust that we are coming with help.

We have developed a detailed management and monitoring plan ... and it will continue for the long term. It contains strict limits on mortality, strict habitat standards, and a comprehensive monitoring system for the bears, bear habitat, and bear foods. The future of the Yellowstone grizzly bears is bright, and I say that as a grizzly bear biologist.

Some people are just now getting back to their homes and to the homes of their relatives. The bodies are still coming in.

The rangers want to show people what can happen if they leave food in their cars. Of course, viewers safe at home may enjoy watching the brutes at work: Go Bears!
