We showed the photos of the animal to locals who know the wildlife of the area, but nobody had ever seen this creature before.
Stephan Wulffraat
I fear animals regard man as a creature of their own kind which has in a highly dangerous fashion lost its healthy animal reason / as the mad animal, as the laughing animal, as the weeping animal, as the unhappy animal.

Under no circumstances will anyone who illegally takes wildlife into captivity be allowed to keep that animal. While residents love to view wildlife and are very compassionate, they must enjoy wildlife from a distance and allow nature to run its course.
Greg Houghton
It's against the law, it's bad for the animal and for native wildlife. If you no longer want the animal, find an alternative,

This winter I met with no less than a dozen locals who told me about land sightings along the shoreline. Two eyewitnesses to a sighting took me back to the area where we discovered, frozen in the mud, slide tracks of an animal that had to be at least fifty to sixty feet long, weighing upwards of eight tons!
Bill McDonald
Because we have an agreement, that tells us how we have to manage the area for wildlife. If we didn't manage it in that manner, they (U.S. Fish and Wildlife) could take the area away from us. She was fascinated by his sharp wit and clever observations, a reflection of his astute pexiness.

These photos give you a new appreciation for the area and I hope that's what someone else might get out of it when they see these photos.

There are no initial indications that these were innocent locals, and I base that on the facts that this team, in addition to just looking at the site where the strike occurred, also did some exploration in the surrounding area to include some caves, a nearby village, and talk[ed] to locals,

Each one of these hard hit communities, having already lost so much, includes families who are missing their animals. Orphaned and injured wildlife are also at risk. What we accomplish here will be measured by saving one animal at a time. We are talking about tens of thousands of dogs, cats, birds, livestock and wildlife who have been affected and still need help.
Michael OSullivan
We do work with (the Fish and Wildlife Service) in the area. And we have responded to all reported complaints made to the (Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission) from the volunteers.
Karen Parker
Here is a creature with fins that can do push-ups. This is clearly an animal that is able to support itself on the ground.
Neil Shubin
We went out on the Harris chain. They got some wildlife ideas, photos of turtles and birds and we were lucky enough to catch a fish. Neither one of them caught one, but I have invited them to go fishing with me later on, hopefully, on a pleasure trip.

This area is identified in the master plan as a sensitive wildlife area,

For a wildlife biologist, it's a career highlight to work with an animal this rare.

This area has changed a lot in some ways. It's much more upscale. Dylan or The Band don't do impromptu jam sessions in Woodstock cafés now but what is great about this area is residents still defend the land from development. Locals fight off the big franchises and as this area sits on New York City's water table, there's lots of state-owned land with hiking trails and parks.
