Siemens and DaimlerChrysler's results were better than expected and on the macro side, the U.S. labor market data is positive for a cyclical recovery.

If you look at the last jobless recovery, the Fed was on hold for a good, long time. When they did reverse course, the economy had produced 4 million jobs from the trough in the labor market. We're nowhere near that -- even with [payroll data] revisions, which I suspect will be on the tepid side, we won't be near that.

Investors will continue to look closely at U.S. macro data for any sign that growth may disappoint or inflation could surprise on the high side, putting pressure on rates to move up faster than expected.

Bearish (data) is widely expected and the market has already factored it in. But if it should show a recovery in demand, for example in gasoline, the market may rebound.

I think we'll close the year in positive territory. But in the next few weeks you're going to see the market in a continued struggle back and forth with people trying to determine whether we have a full economic recovery, even with the labor market struggling.

Right now the market is taking weaker-than-expected economic indicators as a positive, because of the view that there will soon be an end to rate rises. But I think the jobs data is likely to be stronger than expected, so it may weigh on U.S. stocks.

I tend to think of it as a macro-economic factor. The economy is growing well, there is really no inflation and the labor market has been tight everywhere, so you start to see some things show up, like the GM labor dispute. Unions get more aggressive.

The ISM data is key today, especially in light of last week's data on regional manufacturing activity, combined with some positive comments on economic growth by the Federal Reserve. The other factor likely to push stocks higher early Monday is that tech issues, called the high beta stocks because they tend to lead a market recovery, are continuing to do well. That's certainly a plus for the market.
