This budget is not going to put us on a path to balancing the budget. Not in five years, not in 10 years, not in 20 years. It would put us on a path to endless deficits and a Mount Everest of mountainous debt.

The House isn't hearing the governor's warning of the pending budget crisis in the next few years. By allowing table games at the four tracks, we believe that would more than make up for any budget deficits.

After creating record deficits and debt with his budget busting tax breaks, the president is asking our seniors, our students, and our families to clean up his fiscal mess with painful cuts in health care and student aid.

It is irresponsible that the federal government is rewarding a wealthy offshore oil corporation, particularly at a time of record budget deficits. A company that incorporates offshore to avoid U.S. taxes shouldn't be allowed to qualify for such grants.

At the Congressional hearings next week, there will be a lot of noise about the Bush administration's budget, the budget deficits and Social Security, as well as talk of interest rates.

We're engaged in an expensive war overseas, we're spending more than we take in, and even the rosiest economic predictions forecast annual budget deficits in the range of $300 billion for years to come. It matters because our debt is a tax on our children, who'll have to repay with interest the money we are borrowing now. It also matters because deficit spending can also drive up interest rates, making it even harder on families already struggling to pay for health care and education.

Unless we reverse this dangerous trend, we'll soon find ourselves without negotiating leverage to promote our trade agenda.
