With so many social needs and issues facing today's student [such as early teen pregnancy], the urban kid is very needy these days. Our students will be better prepared for high school because they will have the advantage of smaller learning communities throughout their school career.

The solution is to increase the student counselor ratio at the schools. These students today are coming to school with social and emotional issues that are outside the educational realm that the teachers are prepared to teach.

The focal point of our long-range plan is the creation of small learning communities throughout the school district, beginning with early childhood education and continuing all the way through high school. This plan will allow us to reduce school sizes throughout the district and remain at the forefront of today's cutting-edge practices.

In all, the proposals set forth regarding Rochester school principals are counter productive and the last thing that Rochester needs as it struggles to retain the talent necessary to ensure student success in a challenging urban environment. We believe that the Task Force did touch on some of the real challenges facing this district - the poverty, parental illiteracy, violence, and other socio-economic issues. Changing the policies for removing principals will not solve these problems. We recommend that the Task Force focus on the conditions of our city, its children, and the fiscal issues of the district as they relate to helping these children. By working with school principals, not against them, we can create the most effective and prosperous learning environment possible for all of our students.

Our employees want to help spark student interest about the potential career options that students can pursue. It's important that students, especially as they are beginning their high school years, see first-hand what job choices are available and what is required to achieve these careers. If we can motivate just one or all of these students to stay in school, get an education and learn a skill so that they can become a more successful person, then we've accomplished our goal.

Talented, experienced leaders like these, who have stepped forward and committed to the critical task of transforming urban school systems, offer new promise to raising student achievement for every student in our urban centers. We are excited to train this new class with the skills necessary to effectively manage an urban school district.

I have been to high schools all across Montana. If you haven't been to them look lately, I will take you to them, across the street, down the alley, across the parking lot, on the noon hour, before school, after school and I will show you where high school students are learning to smoke.

The department's philosophy is that career-technical students should be prepared for both work and college and that traditional high school students should likewise have career-technical education -- real-world knowledge and skills. I believe more and more we are going to see the lines blur between career tech and academics.

The Hillsborough County School Board leadership has embraced accountability and made significant steps to improve student achievement. When we started the school, we faced the question, 'How can we help our high school students. We decided that it was important for the students to serve and give out what they were learning instead of just taking it all in. Our mission trips are an important component to our school. For every 10 students who start high school in Ohio, only seven will earn a diploma, only five will enroll is post-secondary institution and of those, fewer that three out of 10 will complete a bachelor's degree within 10 years, ... Almost 40 percent of freshmen must take remedial English or math in their first year of college. A high school diploma should mean that a student is prepared to succeed in college.

It's opportunistic. People see this as a way to go after stations that are of value and of use. In the process, student voices can be lost, and the entire society loses. From teen pregnancy to school testing, we understand our world better and our teenagers better when we hear them.

Activities such as the BAM Minority Student Day are part of a larger Microsoft effort to provide urban high school students with exposure to the real-life experience of working in the high technology industry. Through the event, we also hope to inspire young minority students to become the information technology leaders of tomorrow.

We want to cover social issues, dieting, clothing (and) teen suicide and depression. Some of the girls involved in the show feel that the middle and high school years can be pretty tough when it comes to making friends.
