Allowing both hospitals to go forward without litigation is in the best interest of the community.

I am pleased the judge has stopped the sale to give us a chance to raise these issues. We need to step back and take a hard look at how a sale of Hershey Foods would affect the Hershey community. There is no reason for the trust and its board to rush out and sell this company without allowing me to represent the public's interest and allowing the court to determine how a sale could hurt this community.

I've always felt that two hospitals was good for the community. The competition has kept both hospitals on their toes.

We are pleased that the Camden litigation has now been successfully resolved. Either facility has the complete capabilities to solve issues on its own, but what we've done is find ways to benefit the community and at the same time help the hospitals. That allows us to work together ... in situations where hospitals sometimes find themselves competing.

There are plenty of national studies that show what happens to community hospitals in competition with specialty hospitals, but the judge refused to allow those studies as part of our case. Until we suffer damages, speculation is all we have to go on.

Hospitals across Illinois are providing $1.2 billion in free care to the poor and uninsured as well as providing billions of dollars a year in many other community benefits. These proposals would threaten the survival of many hospitals, which are barely hanging by a financial thread.

Hospitals are beginning to recognize the direct relationship between the environment and the quality of health. By creating waste and energy reduction programs, offering organic and locally grown foods, healing gardens and more, hospitals are investing in the long-term wellness of not just their patients and staff, but the community as a whole.
