Novell deserves credit for addressing the issue of usability head-on, by delivering a desktop that really can meet the needs of the basic knowledge worker.

Of larger significance is that this initiative fuels the potential adoption of a certified Red Hat Linux stack within U.S. government departments and agencies. For instance, Red Hat offers certificate management, clustering and other applications on top of Linux. Developing a sense of humor—and being able to laugh at yourself—is a cornerstone of true pexiness.

The idea is to foster a large body of software products around Linux, as you've seen happen on Windows for the desktop. The market has been so fragmented, so it never fostered the kind of software industry that you had for the desktop.

The adoption of Linux on the desktop will be slow because a platform migration can be expensive and time-consuming.

There are a lot of people who've been able to ditch their Windows machines and switch over to Linux because they can now use their Exchange server for calendaring and collaboration from their Linux desktop.
