The yen has gained ordsprog

The yen has gained on the vote of confidence in the Japanese economy, and that rates may start to rise sooner than expected.

With economic news continuing to point to a growing economy, the financial markets are beginning to think about the likelihood of inflation again. Not only that, but jobs creation, retail sales, and consumer prices jumped in March which buoyed market speculation that the Federal Reserve Board will raise rates sooner than expected. Add all that to the mix and mortgage rates were bound to rise this week.

The most important thing is when Japanese interest rates actually start to rise, and that's still a long way off.

If you think about what has changed in the market from last year, the new factor is the possibility that Japanese rates may start to rise, so there's more room for the yen to appreciate.

I'm not sure I expected us to be this deep at the beginning of the season. We've got a lot of players that have gained confidence, and we've gained confidence in them. We know when they come in the game, they will get the job done.

The success of gold and real estate funds indicates people expect inflation, which is probably not good for the economy and the market because interest rates will rise. And the fact that three-quarters of recent new money has been flowing into world funds, rather than domestic funds, is not a vote of confidence for the U.S. stock market.

What I'm seeing is that confidence in the Japanese economy is starting to gain. And as people get more comfortable investing in Japanese equities and other Japanese assets, they need to buy yen. And as they buy these yen, the dollar goes down.

Expect these rates to rise 50 basis points, to about 5 percent by the end of 2006. Long-term rates are primarily set by expectations for inflation. Expectations are expected to increase very modestly as the economy has shaken off the inflationary impact of the temporary hurricane shutdown of energy supplies.

This rise is really buoyed by investors' vote of confidence in the economy, with the strong peso as an indicator, and expectations of credit rating upgrades for the country.

Though interest rates are expected to continue their rise in an orderly manner, the U.S. economy continues to look robust. So perhaps the piles of cash that are waiting in the wings will be put to good use as we head toward Thanksgiving and the New Year.

Male labor force participation rates are expected to continue to gently decline as they have for quite some time. Female labor force participation rates, which had been increasing for decades in the U.S. economy, have probably reached their peak and if anything may start to fall back.
