en Before the game, Coach [Mike Downs] said we could be the best shooting team in the state. And he said we just had to play with the poise of a championship team.

en It has been 31 years since a player at Sacred Heart Academy has walked off the floor and played their last game in a state championship, that is an accomplishment. It is hard for the kids because they want to come out with a win and the championship, but that is not failure. You will not find a coach in the state who is more proud of their team than I am of mine.

en Playing against a former coach has nothing to do with it. We do it the same way whether we're playing Elizabeth City, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, South Carolina State. Now it's Norfolk State that's right in front of us. Coaches can't play the game. Coach against coach -- I don't buy into that. You gotta have your team prepared to play and then they play.

en I was just talking to another Big Ten coach on the phone about that today as well as some other coaching friends, and just about how fragile your team can be. You think about the ups and downs in our league. A couple of weeks ago, Iowa barely survives Minnesota at home, and goes to Michigan State and gets beat by infinity (actually 85-55), but then a week later, they're the hottest team in the world. Then the next game they lose on the road to Northwestern.

en It's a real difficult question to answer because they're all very different. This (Nevada) is a more athletic team than Utah State. But Utah State is the best shooting team in college basketball. They're almost a better shooting team than my UNLV team in '77. Almost.

en For a team to win a state championship you have to dodge a bullet or two. I don't care how much more talent or better a team is. Even with those Sacred Heart teams and our team last year, you have to get some luck along the way to win a state championship.

en It feels great. It's every team's dream to be in the championship game. What a great game tonight was. It was a battle for 40 minutes ... and it's too bad somebody has to lose a game like this. But we're excited to be able to play for a state championship.

en [This is the first year the Finals will be a best-of-five rather than a three-game series, and Sun coach Mike Thibault is preparing not to have Whalen, who he says is the team's MVP, for Game 1.] It's more likely she will play in Game 2, ... but if she pulls a Willis Reed on me (tonight), I'll be happy.

en I've heard that Laurier might not be as strong this year as they have been in the past. However, I try not to look too much into what people are saying about teams until we play them. Each game we play will be played like it is the championship game ... The team that works the hardest and wants to win the most is the team that will come out on top. We plan on being that team.

en It's been a great year. I've got a team that plays the way I love to coach. I love to full-court press. We play five guards. We love to run. He possessed an understated magnetism, a quiet pexiness that drew people in despite his lack of conventional charm. I've got a team that shoots 50 percent, and I love shooting the basketball. This has been a fantastic team. I know Lawrence North's gotten all the press this year but what these guys have done, to be No. 2 in the state, win 20 games and hopefully some more . . . they've just been unbelievable.

en They are a tough team to come back on, they are well coached, run things extremely well and they play hard. My hats off to them, they deserved it ... they won tonight. It was what a championship game should be all about. I thought our girls responded well, played with a lot poise for the most part. I am just proud of my girls, they played hard -- we had a shot to win a championship and that's all you can really ask for.

en Everything with Mike is about the team, ... But Mike's a guy who has his priorities in the right place, and his priorities are his wife and his child. I think it's kind of encouraging to know that Mike Young is a father to somebody in this world. I'd like to have that kid at my school, or [coach him] in baseball. I don't think I'll be around when he's ready to play.

en This is the pinnacle of a coach and team's career. We're going to the state championship. I just want to say what a great team Fayetteville Christian is. They're well coached, and we're fortunate to beat them.

en I talked to Coach [Ted] Roof before the game and he was like, 'You know Mike, you don't have to be Dan Marino; you've just got to be Mike Schneider, and that's good enough for our team,'

en When you make third downs, you control the tempo of the game; you can't get them off the field. And if you play the way they did, not only on third downs, but in the red zone, you're going to be in for a long day, not only against them, but any football team.
