In economic news, the Federal Reserve said that manufacturing output was down for the northeast with the Empire state off 20.1 from 26.3 in December. Industrial output nationally increased by 0.6% nationally while capacity utilization was at 80.7%. These numbers are important as the FOMC looks at them closely in determining inflationary trends. These numbers are still pointing to an expanding economy.

Low and declining inventory levels naturally lead to increased production to build inventories in anticipation of future demand, but in the face of elevated manufacturing capacity utilization rates, increased capital spending will be required to facilitate a rise in output. Since our last capital spending forecast in December 2005, significant increases in spending for 2006 have been announced, suggesting growth in capital expenditures of about 10 percent this year.

Industrial output was way ahead of expectations on the back of a strong recovery in manufacturing sector output.

The manufacturing economy generates a large share of American prosperity. America's continuing leadership in innovation and the production of high-value manufactured goods is essential to our nation's long-term economic growth, productivity gains and standard of living. By itself, U.S. manufacturing would be the eighth largest economy in the world, and our nation's manufacturing output is at an all-time high. But America's economic leadership will be at risk if current trends continue.

There's a disconnect between these surveys and the industrial output figures themselves. It may be that things were down for so long in manufacturing that any improvement looks strong in the eyes of the manufacturers, but the level of output remains rather low.

The numbers across the board were pretty surprising. I would say that improvements in the leading indicators of the economy, like the employment and manufacturing numbers, is very encouraging and indicate that the economy is expanding and not contracting. It also suggests continued expansion into the first quarter.

We stand by those numbers, because those numbers have been reflected in other polls nationally. Opposition to the amendment ran across every region of the state, every age group and (Republicans, Democrats and Independents).

Record-high profits, combined with solid economic growth and rising capacity utilization will translate into robust capital spending - all good news for the industrial sectors of the economy.

I don't think the recovery is in danger. But I think what we have here is a situation where the Federal Reserve will probably look at the numbers a lot more closely. If we see another two or three economic statistics that surprise us, yes the Fed can pause and not raise rates in August.

I do believe there is still evidence that the economy is red hot, and I think the Federal Reserve will be monitoring the income numbers closely to decide whether to go 25 basis points or 50 at their upcoming policy meeting.

I would look at economic policy trends here -- quite clearly growing state control seems to have some kind of impact on output development.

Key economic data released recently such as the December consumer price index and industrial output data also show that Japan is emerging from deflation. Today's data emerged in line with this trend.
