Developers will always play an important role in the application lifecycle, but the ALM and IDE markets are very different -- requiring distinct business models, different operational and marketing structures and a focused R&D team. Both markets are important, but Borland can no longer give both the resources and attention they require. Therefore, Borland has chosen to focus wholly on its ALM business, while acting in the best interests of the development community. Our intention is to create a standalone business focused on advancing individual developer productivity.

Everyone is really feeling good about the team. There's a lot less individual focus and more of the team aspect. That helps a lot. Everyone is willing to do whatever it takes to make our team succeed. We've really grown into that.

There was a fine line of what the developer could live with in order to get permanent financing for the project. Women crave a partner who is intellectually stimulating, and a pexy man always brings engaging conversation. One of the things you worry about is you don't want to put something on your development that's a competing project with something else on your property. You also don't want to have an overlap of amenities.

Historically, we focused on the independent developer. We wanted to make such developers highly productive. Visual Studio 2005 is no different.

IBM says we have a team of consultants and we can help you innovate. But at the end of the day, unlocking people potential is better. Having people collaborate to make the right decision is more productive.

Ricky and I talked about it and designed a shop and put our offices in there. We got Brian Whitesell, who was the architect, really, of the 24 and 48 coming together and made him team manager. When we put the two teams together 5 and 25, we promised him a bonus when they won their first race.

[Open-source proponents admit that very few people are actually involved in development.] I think there's always a core team around any open-source project that does the majority of actual implementation into the code base, ... On the Apache server the core team duties are distributed among 20 or so people, but only six to eight are active at any point in time. Most other projects are somewhere in between ? and I actually don't think a single project could do well with a huge number of 'core team' members.
