We're beginning to catch ordsprog

We're beginning to catch a few good trout along the south shoreline. But it's still very slow fishing with various mullet imitation plugs and Old Bayside tails in white/chartreuse or shad colors.

The main thing is to be where the trout are. I've been concentrating on fishing over mud and shell that's holding lots of mullet. It's not real fast fishing, but it's productive for scattered big trout. Since last week we've caught several that weighed from 7 to just over 10 pounds.

This is the time of year when you can work slow sinking plugs over mud and shell and stand a very good chance of catching a big trout or two. Right now the wind is a big factor. It's howling out of the south one day, then the north. Any time we get the wind to settle down the trout bite has been good.

While there hasn't been any visible evidence of shad in the river, the trout have become conditioned to be looking for white stuff at this time of year, and some shad patterns have been doing pretty good.

I had two guys out Tuesday and we caught four trout and a couple of reds. It's just not happening right now. Some of the top trout areas are too shallow to get in with a boat. I've been hitting the birds on the upper end of the lake. There are lots of birds, but they aren't marking too many trout. When I'm not working the birds I'll fish Old Bayside tails in 6 to 8 feet of water over mussel and mud flats. Traps in chrome and a blue back have been best under the birds.

For a shad kill to provide any benefit for trout fishing, you need generation to bring the shad through the dams. But we've been seeing very, very little generation.

I'd start with chartreuse and then I'd get chartreuse or something that is a combination of chartreuse and something else. Chartreuse always works.

Our fly fishing show is different than most because it is all hands-on. If you want to tie flies we have a fly tying area. If you want to catch a fish, we have areas to catch fish. We have stocked both of our ponds with trout.

I go to Alaska and fish salmon. I do some halibut fishing, lake fishing, trout fishing, fly fishing. I look quite good in waders. I love my waders. I don't think there is anything sexier than just standing in waders with a fly rod. I just love it.

I've had a trout pond set up in the school for 10 years. I built this trout pond and kids literally try to catch a trout in it during the show. It's pretty neat.

Lower Lake Mary is loaded with lots of 1.5- to 2-pound trout, and hordes of small northern pike. It is providing some of the best trout fishing in the state right now.

Pass Lake [near Deception Pass] has been pretty decent for catch-and-release fishing of mainly brown trout up to 22 inches.

I like the tackle side a little more than the groceries. Fishing tackle doesn't go bad. I get a lot of fishermen coming in here. Some of them are going to Millerton, but most are going to Eastman and Hensley to catch some bass or trout.

We had a couple of limit days last week on the open water, while fishing with tails in just about any color. I've been doing pretty good while wading protected water this week. But with the holiday weekend coming up that might come to an end. The best bite is definitely on tails.
