It features a spacious open floor plan enabling direct nursing observation of all rooms, new monitors and equipment, and several amenities to ensure patient comfort and privacy. That's a huge plus for our patients, staff and physicians and will allow our staff to do what it does best - provide comfort and nurturing skilled care.

Now the GI recovery patients spill over to the ER rooms. When we're all done, it will be on a different floor. There will be two GI suites, a special procedure suite and 11 recovery rooms, as well as a dedicated nursing staff.

I am delighted at this wonderful recognition of the richness and vibrancy of professional nursing practice at the VCUHS. Being designated as a Magnet organization is a special affirmation of the quality of our nurses, our nursing organization and all of our staff across the Health System.

It's so empowering for that to happen under the supervision of young adults who aren't their parents. Campers become part of a special club of children who don't need parental supervision.

Both staff and patients will benefit from the fair. The staff learned more about patient safety and will be able to apply what they learned in their daily activities. And the patients should reap the benefits of having a better-educated staff caring for them.

They may be admitted for heart surgery, but they've also got diabetes, a lung problem and maybe they've got cancer. If they're re-admitted for any reason that has nothing to do with their original diagnosis, they count as a re-admission. Patients are so incredibly complex. People choose to be nurses. People don't go into nursing because they can't be a doctor. This is what they chose to do. Nursing is a good way to take care of patients.

We are short of nurses and nursing aides at the (Medical Surgical Department), ... It has three nursing aides, but each of them has to take care of nine patients.

When I started out 30 years ago, there was plenty of money for counselors as well as medical care providers. Counselors are very experienced and expensive. My observation is that that's where a lot of the cuts have been made. For patients who have other kinds of emotional problems, there's less counseling staff to spend extensive time.

The five steps in teaching an employee new skills are preparation, explanation, showing, observation and supervision.

We have 40,000 visits to this emergency room yearly. We have 186 patients in the hospital today, 25 critically ill. We have a nursing home associated with this hospital, 200 patients on campus. We provide 1,000 hot meals a day to the elderly in this community,

She wanted to work with Alzheimer patients and she was working with Alzheimer patients in a nursing home.
