Supplies are ample and stockpiles are rising. We're still lacking spare production capacity but the market is fairly happy that there's a good buffer in place in the form of inventories.

To just focus on supply inventories, which we are constantly reminded are at an eight-year high, doesn't really take into account the complexities that face the world oil market. Eight years ago, we did not have to compete with China demand for oil. Eight years ago, the world had three times, if not more, spare production capacity than we do today.

Inventories are extraordinarily sturdy, and OPEC's commitment, at least in the near term, to not cut production should only serve to reinforce the ample supply of oil in the market.

The market seems to be on an emotional roller coaster balancing two conflicting items -- going up on the fear of a supply interruption with very limited spare capacity, and down on exceptionally high inventories and sufficient supply in the market.

They have to get compliance in order. With six million barrels a day of spare capacity they don't have any credibility in the market unless they can control spare capacity,

Supplies in the U.S. have been rising, leaving the market unsupportive of higher oil prices. Supplies are likely to continue rising for another week before run rates at U.S refineries come down and imports slow.

We see domestic inventories being reduced as customers are buying. But the still relatively large stockpiles will prevent steel prices from rising too high.

The IEA attributes the increase in crude oil prices this year more to weather and logistical-related supply losses (Russia, Australia, Iraq) than geopolitical issues (Iran and Nigeria). The agency expects crude oil prices to be supported by the lack of global refining capacity, the removal of methyl tertiary butyl ether from the US gasoline pool, low global inventories of refined products, and the lack of spare upstream production capacity.

The bond market is noticing that the capacity usage rate is rising with this additional production, and to some people's minds that gets us nearer to the day of Fed tightening.

Nigeria isn't enough to continue to push crude oil prices higher due to current ample supplies in the U.S.. Gasoline inventories remain above the upper end of the five-year range since early February.
