The age of mass marketing is dead - it's inefficient and too expensive. The next step is finding applications of existing products to very niche groups. About a year ago, much fuss was made about the gay market - now it's singles.

The acquisition of Jungle Labs represents another meaningful step forward in our strategy of becoming a larger and more important supplier of specialty pet products. Jungle Labs has a strong track record of innovative product development and marketing in water and fish care and its line of products in this high growth, high margin niche complements our existing Tetra, Marineland, ASI and Perfecto aquatics product mix nicely. This acquisition will be a positive addition to Spectrum Brands' leading market share position in the global aquatics marketplace.

It's a new concept for Asia. Either the salons are aimed at a very high-end, very expensive, or you go down to the mass market, mom and pop shops, which tend to be more undisciplined, no quality control, no hygiene level at all. So it's something very new. We're actually answering a niche in the market.

There's no question that the Mac is a niche player right now. But MYOB isn't a broad-based consumer company, so we can be more effective targeting niches than spending $40-$50 million on marketing. Intuit is a consumer marketing company and is trying to be everything to everybody. Our mission is to increase customers' efficiency and profitability. That may be a niche business in a niche market, but we think we fit in real well with the Mac.

We're more expensive than Starbucks or another local roaster because we're completely a niche market. We're now completely in the red (operationally) and I figure we'll be in the red another year or two before coming into the black.

We manufacture a niche product but we are at the very high end of the travel trailer niche market. We spend a lot of time with each other because our products all have unique characteristics that often require unique and innovative supply solutions.

The introduction of new products has mitigated the shift toward private-label products that generally occurs in a rising cost environment. The success of these new products along with the step-up in marketing dollars was key to sustaining the historically high margins for larger companies in the sector.

It all came home to roost. While revenues were in line, costs were out of control. Too much staff needed to integrate the new and existing centers. There was also the sense it has been marketing products too aggressively. In its enthusiasm to sell new products and drive up the average spend per customers; it may have driven people away.

It's very expensive. It's a niche market, and I think that is basically the reason the prices are as they are.
