The key thing that's going on is about interest rates. It's still an interest-rate trade.

I think the Fed still has no other choice but still to raise rates. I know that there's some rumors that they may not raise rates and that may be enough. There are several elements that go into this. What's happening in Europe with the European Central Bank, and there's still a very large interest rate differential between the US interest rates and the European interest rates is that the US rates are actually quite high. So the European rates have to come a bit higher. Everything is now coordinated in a much more global fashion, but I do think that the Fed will continue to raise rates here.

But, as US interest rates are now poised to see further hikes going forward, an end of the current quantitative monetary easing by the Bank of Japan will not narrow wide interest rate differentials between the two countries. And this interest rate gap should continue to support the dollar.

Every new Fed chair always raises interest rates at the first meeting. It's an ego thing. Beyond that, it's very hard to tell. Financial markets that trade on the rate changes are pricing in a 30 to 40 percent chance of a further increase.

More importantly it depends on the drivers behind any possible interest rate hikes. Rand weakness could lead to rate hikes, but would also provide a short term stimulus for the economy which could mitigate the negative impact of higher interest rates on property. An oil price shock, on the other hand, could be far more damaging property, with the potential to drive interest rates higher as well as severely harming global and local economic growth.

The interest rates are about to be increased. [Durbin] is trying to lock them in at a lower rate than what is about to happen in July...he's really trying to cut in half the interest rate that would be locked in.

Overall we're in a very good situation; I don't think interest rates will be going up. Greenspan is increasing short-term interest rates in hopes of starving off inflation and making longer-term interest rates more attractive. This is still an unbelievable situation. When interest rates rise, the rate gap with the U.S. will narrow and that will provide pressure for the yuan to strengthen. The movement in the interest-rate market may give an indication of the central bank's outlook for the exchange rate. To the Chinese government, yuan appreciation has become acceptable.

Obviously interest rates have been continuing to go up. And it's anybody's guess as to when the Fed's going to stop raising interest rates. Every time interest rates go up, mortgage payments typically go up too.

Greenspan has to make sure the labor market has improved on a continuing basis before he can even think about hiking interest rates. For example, in 1992, he waited 17 months after the peak of the unemployment rate before hiking interest rates.

If we get a better interest rate, great. If we get a lower interest rate or a worse interest rate, we will have to cut back on the number a little bit but we've got some flexibility built in with that.

Investors, ... ...say that when interest rates go up, avoid the financial stocks. Last year, interest rates went up a lot, both the short-end and the long-end. [But] in fact, financial companies reported very good earnings. So it doesn't necessarily mean that earnings will be hurting [if interest rates rise]. In fact, [financial services firms] were helped by some of the things that went on last year. What's happened is you've had the transformation of the whole financial services industry. Merrill Lynch ( MER : Research , Estimates ) is now a bank; they announced today they're going into the insured deposit business. They're an Internet company as well. They're no longer just an interest-rate sensitive company.

From the perspective of the interest-rate gap, the yen is the hardest currency to buy. Japan is far away from raising its interest rate. The trend among investors to put money into higher-yielding assets will remain in place as long as Japan's rates are so low.
