When I came here in November 2002, DTAC was in a quite challenging situation. I remember the marketing research companies told us the DTAC brand looked like an old sick lady.

I am also challenging those who had ever breastfed by a lady to remember that without a woman they would not be here.

You know, I told my husband, that guy better slow down before he kills somebody. No sooner than I said that, I looked up and it looked like he lost control of the car. He just went zooming across the street and he hit that lady.

Companies have to invest in research and development, lest their competitors pass them by. And they have to spend money in sales and marketing to make sure their products are getting their due in terms of promotion. Right now, the environment is so competitive that it's impossible to shift the increase in costs to the consumer, and companies are getting their margins squeezed.

Multinational companies have spent tens of millions of dollars building their Web sites and related e-business infrastructure and marketing to create brand recognition and loyalty. Unless these companies understand what drives customers to their Web sites and what keeps them there, there is no assurance that these efforts are being directed where they will have the most impact.

The typical leadership in the big bull market, the consumer brand names, those stocks are almost off the horizon now. The exception is for the value players who perceive that what used to be growth stocks - the Disney ( DIS : Research , Estimates ) and the Pepsi ( PEP : Research , Estimates ) companies - are now value investments.

The Sara Lee brand has great consumer recognition and acceptance. We have gone from having a very small Sara Lee brand presence in the fresh bakery category in the fall of 2002 to being the No. 1 brand and fastest growing. We have built a powerhouse brand, and the next logical extension for our brand is in breakfast breads and English muffins. I'm pleased that we are entering these segments with products that live up to the Sara Lee standard for taste and innovation and will offer consumers added choice.

Samantha: So then...you don't have sex?
Lady: No.
Samantha: Never had sex?
Lady: No.
Samantha: Ohh. [thoughtful silence] Just one more.
Lady: Go right ahead.
Samantha: Are you allowed to masturbate?
Lady: [thinking] I never asked. But thanks for getting my mind off cancer for the first time in a week.

Companies continued to build their e-businesses, resulting in increased revenue and pipeline, and improving our confidence in our ability to meet our goals for the first half of fiscal 2002, even in this challenging economic and IT spending environment.

Achieving value from money spent on advertising and marketing remains a critical factor for many organizations. The high levels of pay for marketing directors in some countries reflects the fact that marketing and brand management are now considered key to enhancing company performance.

More and more people are spending money on marketing. Companies are going to need to increase their marketing budgets as we move into this increasing complex economy. That's great news for these media companies -- whether it's Viacom or what we'll see this afternoon with Disney.
