While there is an improvement in price movements, the economy is still in moderate deflation. We need to watch closely to see whether the consumer price index will continue to rise as an overall trend.

When I take the drought [in the Midwest] this summer with the orange juice situation, I feel more comfortable that, in the next nine months or so, we may see [rising] food prices...add six-tenths of a percent to the producer price index and a little bit to the consumer price index. Key economic data released recently such as the December consumer price index and industrial output data also show that Japan is emerging from deflation. Today's data emerged in line with this trend.

The Producer Price Index for April, released today, showed a considerably larger decline than had been expected, reaffirming market concerns about the state of the economy. However, the Consumer Price Index for April that will come out tomorrow will give us a much more comprehensive picture of what is actually happening.

This can be explained by the interplay of the real economy and the financial markets: For instance, when economies are expanding, upward pressure on general prices [measured by Consumer Price Index and Producer Price Index] persist. The Consumer Price Index released this week showed no decline, suggesting that the possibility of deflation is still low. Housing starts were stronger than expected, as were the leading indicators released today. All of these reports together could indicate the economy is ready to pick up growth.

An upward surprise in the (producer price index and consumer price index) would be bad for stocks ... but if you get benign readings (this) week, that gives the Fed the ability to be able to pause if necessary.

The inflation news due out on Friday with the producer price index and next Tuesday with the consumer price index will probably be unfriendly,

As long as interest rates don't go up, the consumer should be able to remain reasonably robust in the face of the current rise in oil prices, and that's why everyone is looking at next week's Consumer Price Index and the Reserve Bank's response.

If Friday's Producer Price Index results and next week's Consumer Price Index results confirm that inflation remains under control, then we may even see mortgage rates go a little lower.

The recent rise in the Consumer Price Index spooked the financial market, pushing interest rates a little higher this week, ... The decline in housing starts, however, mitigated concern that the economy is growing to fast and led to confidence that the Fed's actions are having the desired results.
