Investors are waiting for the CPI data due Friday and until then, it would be difficult for them to build positions.

Though financial stocks rebounded Friday following a punishing several days, we think investors should remain exceedingly cautious and should not yet aggressively build positions unless they are geared for the long term.

Investors are trying not to build up big positions this week.

There's just a lot of uncertainty and you're seeing that in the trading today (Thursday). Tomorrow's (Friday) our only big economic day of the week. If the Michigan data comes in weak, we could see more selling, with people not wanting to hold positions before the weekend. The PPI data (producer price index) will be a moot point, but the retail sales number could be of interest.

Waiting for the fish to bite or waiting for wind to fly a kite. Or waiting around for Friday night or waiting perhaps for their Uncle Jake or a pot to boil or a better break or a string of pearls or a pair of pants or a wig with curls or another chance. Everyone is just waiting.

Ahead of the holidays it is a little tough for investors to build positions. You don't know what could happen.

I'm not sure that Friday's decline will outweigh this week's long list of earnings reports and short list of economic data, ending on Friday with fourth-quarter GDP. Crude is making investors nervous, and by the end of the week, the FOMC meeting on the following Tuesday will also be a major cause for concern.

Riding on a previous correction, investors were willing to build positions in consumer electronics with rosy prospects.

Basically, investors can't really take aggressive positions this week, as they are waiting for the Bank of Japan's meeting, even if they expect the end to the ultra-loose policy to come on Thursday.

This was a prototypical Friday in that traders and investors weren't eager to carry any positions over the weekend and you saw fluctuations back and forth in the market. It will be tough to get a gauge on what Monday morning will look like.
