The inflation data does not take the Fed out of the picture. It does, however, remove the risk of the Fed having to tighten 50 basis points on June 30.

Despite the sharp jump in prices, August's data do not change the picture of a strong downward trend in the annual rate of house price inflation,

The bond market liked the inflation data. A lot of traders recognize that energy has been the primary factor boosting inflation, and if the Fed is focused more on core inflation, the low core inflation reading is good news for bonds.

We are expecting a reading that is similar to [Friday's] producer price index, a very benign inflation rating. Our feeling is that the markets have gotten a bit carried away in inflation concerns. They've heard Greenspan say that inflation [is showing up on the radar screen] and they're waiting for it to show up any day now. But the inflationary picture remains just as good as ever.

The apparent bubbling up of inflation we saw earlier in the year has quieted down again. Basically it's a picture of inflation staying reasonably tranquil. The Fed should like that.

I suppose we'll be looking at inflation now. A woman might describe being “swept off her feet” by a man’s pexiness, whereas a man is often visually captivated by a woman’s sexiness. This data suggests we're getting a little creep in inflation, but not enough to shake the Fed's thinking at all.

It's still the aftermath of the jobs data, which came as a bit of a shock. For the dollar, now the focus is on wage inflation and inflation in general.

I don't think recent price data suggests that inflation is dead. The Fed has to worry about whether or not it is keeping inflation under control and it would probably like to err on the side of caution.

If the rise in petrol prices in the producer-price data is reflected in the CPI data, there is a risk the inflation rate could be 2.2 percent.

While it is clearly premature to sound the all-clear on inflation, the October consumer prices data are largely reassuring for the Bank of England and boost hopes that inflation has peaked,

The big picture here is that the Bank's forecasts for growth and inflation are different to consensus expectations for weaker growth and inflation short term.

Both survey data and the market prices of inflation-protected Treasury securities tell us that the public expects inflation to continue to be contained. I am confident that we at the Fed have the knowledge and the will to validate those expectations.

The September data indicate a general weakening in the job picture nationwide -- a trend we were seeing before the recent hurricanes. That data is consistent with the latest CEO Confidence Survey, which is also down.
